I have spent my life training and showing horses, because it is what I love to do. Horse Shows are a good clean family friendly wholesome activity; that a whole family can be involved in together. There are opportunities to develop life skills that include responsibility, kindness, compassion, honesty, commitment, forgiveness, people skills, horse skills, driving, parking, stage fright, knot tying, tire changing, money managing, grooming, patience, work ethic, sportsmanship, wardrobe selection, meal preparation for horses and people; and the list goes on and on. Even if some members of a family do not want to compete, there are multitudes of behind the scenes tasks that need to be done, giving everyone opportunities to to use their gifts and talents. Therefore, I wholeheartedly want to support and promote showing horses!

Over the years that I have been involved in showing horses and promoting horse shows, I have occasionally considered doing something else for awhile. I learned to ride a pony when I was 5, it became my passion and transportation! And I have been committed to training and showing horses ever since. But I quickly remind myself that there is nothing else I would rather do! The only adjustment I would consider making would be to incorporate more ministry along with showing horses. Since I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and became a Christian, I have a desire to draw as many people closer to God as I can. I hold Cowboy Church Services at horse shows, rodeos, trail rides, horse fairs, and everywhere I can. But I still felt that there must be a way to let our lights shine for Jesus before everyone at horse shows, since only a small portion of them would attend church services. As I prayed about this, and asked God how I could reach more people, the impression came to me to start the Christian Horse Show Association! Yes! I said to God, that is a great idea! If there was a Christian Horse Show Association then like minded believers, who love God and love horses, could join together to encourage each other to let their lights shine for Jesus in front of multitudes of people at horse shows! They would no longer feel that showing horses was taking them away from church, ministry and spreading God’s Word, they could share their faith while they were showing their horses! After carrying this vision for several years, it has finally come to pass, and has manifested in the physical realm here on earth in the form of the Christian Horse Show Association, which is a network of believers who let their lights shine for Jesus while they show horses, or support those who do!

The Christian Horse Show Association keeps track of points that participants earn while showing their horses anywhere, and awards World Championships and other prizes in multitudes of categories to recognize and acknowledge jobs well done. Meanwhile spreading the Name of Christ at the same time! Therefore, we believe that every Christian who desires to share their Faith and draw people closer to God, and who also love horses, should join the Christian Horse Show Association!

Josh grew up on a cattle ranch in western Colorado. Training horses was not the family focus at the time; rather, it was earning a living from livestock. Soon his dad switched gears from working cattle to training horses. When John decided to share his training methods with others, Josh was there with him traveling the country and riding in the clinics. At age 16, Josh gave weekend clinics, trained horses and conducted private instruction at a facility in Minnesota. It was then he realized that he too had a passion for training horses and a gift for teaching people. After graduating high school, Josh worked full time with his dad. Some years more than 30 weeks were spent on the road conducting symposiums, clinics and expos. At home, Josh assisted with the John Lyons Certification Program, a program he now conducts, manages and owns. The Lyons’ Legacy had begun.

The programs offered have since expanded to include Colorado and Arizona campus locations, the Lyons Legacy Online Training Program, and even eligibility for Veterans Education Benefits for Colorado campus programs. As a result, Josh and his wife and partner, Jana, as well as their sons, have relocated to Scottsdale, AZ. Whether it be for clinics, the John and Josh Lyons Certification Program, the Josh Lyons Accreditation Program or performance training, Josh and Jana are in constant demand. Currently, the Lyons Legacy Equestrian Academy, one of the world’s most sought-after equine educational schools, has produced hundreds of certified trainers spread across 43 states and 6 countries.

Hi, I’m Victor Mathis, and it is my great pleasure to be a charter member and supporter of the Christian Horse Show Association (CHSA). I am Executive Director of Mentoring with Horses LLC and blessed to now live in Greeneville, East Tennessee with Helen, my wife of 35 years. While I do not personally compete in horse shows, preferring to pleasure and trail ride, I do have the great privilege of managing the barn, horses, and EAS horse programs at Free Will Baptist Family Ministries’ (FWBFM’s) Heartstone Ranch Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) center, nestled up against the Appalachian Mountains on their 200+ acres campus headquarters in Camp Creek, TN. Here we provide Youth Mentoring through both therapeutic and experiential horsemanship to at-risk adolescent boys in FWBFM’s Residential Program, more specifically Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) activities and encounters for Life Skills Development to help better equip these teens for healthier transitions into adulthood. In support of this I am a PATH International certified professional Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL). I am also certified to deliver Stable Moments® programming which is specifically tailored to foster and adopted at-risk youth dealing with early developmental (complex) trauma. This year (2025) we are also planning, by the grace of God, to extend experiential learning (EAL) opportunities to our surrounding community through Horse Encounters (young kids), Horse Discovery Camps (teens), and Rewilding Retreats (adults).

Going back a little, the Lord blessed me with a 34-year corporate Information Technology (IT) career in Tampa Bay, Florida before leading us to relocate to East TN, downsize, and ultimately for me to retire from IT in early 2021. Also, I became an ordained elder in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) in early 1998 and have served the Lord in multiple local churches, ministries, and leadership capacities since then. Being able to focus fulltime and combine my passions for the Lord, evangelism, ministry, horses, and helping at-risk youth, in what I consider to be a form of Equine-Assisted Ministry (EAM), is a gracious God-given blessing I cherish. Having a Cowboy Church just around the corner from where we now live and helping them establish a Horse Fun Shows outreach ministry a few years ago has also been a rewarding blessing. So, the opportunity and privilege to join this evangelistic-minded, horse-loving, Christian ministry and network known as the Christian Horse Show Association (CHSA) is a welcome Spirit-led discovery and I welcome and encourage you to join us! Sincerely, Victor Mathis

Almost 30 years ago, we rented a house where the owner left behind some horses and ponies he had bought for his kids. Our first question to the vet was “How long it will it be before these ponies grow up to be horses?” 😀 Needless to say over the last 3 decades we’ve learned a lot. My wife Donna and I have participated in Western Pleasure, Barrels, Poles, Trail Classes and even some Cowboy Mounted Shooting. Some of our earliest horse memories were watching John Lyons “Round Pen Reasoning” series! We met Dave a little over 20 years ago and formed a fast friendship around the Lord, horses and Christian music. (I toured back in the 80s with a group – actually how I came to know the Lord, but that is story for another time) My current band NOT ASHAMED had the honor of opening for Petra on their 2023 Southeast Summer Tour, jamming with Phil Keaggy and Rex Carroll and we’ve been blessed to have a couple of songs on the radio as well!

While, Christian music is my passion, technology is my business. I’ve been a technology consultant for 3 decades now, including being the CTO of several startups. I can see now that everything in my life has led up to starting the Christian Horse Show Association and the Lord put Dave and I together for a purpose. I am looking forward to the mighty works and changed lives that will result from this endeavor!

LLM Ranch is dedicated to Living Life’s Moments. At a very young age, I was in a horrific accident, and it was thought I might not walk again. Doctors had suggested getting me involved in various activities and interacting with groups of people in need. After rehabilitation, I was able to walk again and enter into dance and baton. Our groups would travel to nursing homes, assisted living, and churches to perform. Many years later, I now realize how very important it is to visit these places. I still travel with my barnyard friends to provide love and friendship to those in need.

Farming and horses have always been a part of my life. LLM Ranch is very active in Freestyle reining in hopes of sending beautiful messages to others. After over 50 years in the horse industry, with many championships under our belt, we are so Thankful to have met many awesome people and had the opportunity to work with some wonderful horses. We are so Blessed to be helping others find their next great horse. For all we leave when we are gone is what we have done while we are here. Life is very short, so live every moment of it! We are Happy to be a charter member and sponsor of Christian Horse Show Association!
